Newly elected Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison took his oath of office yesterday in Washington, DC using Thomas Jefferson’s copy of the Qur’an. The Qu’ran is the primary religious text of Islam. The book was loaned to Ellison for the ceremony by the US Library of Congress.
Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States and author of the Declaration of Independence. He also was an avid collector of books for his personal library at Monticello. Jefferson donated his library of thousands of books to help establish the early US Library of Congress.
Ellison, a Muslim, received criticism in the media last month when he announced that he would be using a Qu’ran during his swearing in ceremony. His critics believed it to be unAmerican to be sworn into public office with a Qu’ran.
